Credit Where It Is Due

January 9th, 2007 · 2 Comments

I apologize for having so many sports-related posts recently. I’ve gotten way too wrapped up in the college football postseason, but after last night’s game and today’s post, you can be sure there won’t be much more talk of it (at least for a few months). And I promise, as soon as something remotely interesting happens in my life - something more interesting than climbing trees - you’ll be the first to know.

Congrats to the Gators for whomping the Buckeyes last night. Last night’s game was fun to watch (though after the first 16 seconds, I was like “Uh oh…”). This wasn’t the same team that played the 13 games before last night, but I’ll give them credit for showing up big, shutting down Troy Smith, and making that little boy cry.

(Seriously, did you see that? Toward the end of the fourth quarter, they switched to a camera angle of a little boy in Buckeye gear, leaning on his father’s shoulder, tears in his eyes. I know its mean for me to say this, I know that some of you will judge me for it, but DAMN that feels good.)

(Literally, as I wrote the above sentence, I got the following IM from Briggs:

Briggs: best part of my day so far?
Briggs: Suarez, commenting to our boss that the best part was watching Ohio St. fans cry. My boss, somewhat taken back, dismisses it and says that the people they showed crying were little kids. Suarez, without missing a beat, says “So?”

But it was an entertaining game. The first few minutes were fun, but I found myself not really cheering for either team. Though I said I would be rooting for Florida, and I did want them to win, I found myself being upset when OSU botched plays.

Briggs kindly stepped in.

“Amish, I made a $65 parlay on Florida winning, and the over.”
“No spread?”
“No, just Florida outright.”
“What’s the over/under?”
“47″
“And how much will you win?”
“Around $370. Wanna get in for half?”
“Um….yup.”

And so, with close to $200 in potential winnings, I found myself with a whole lot of motivation to cheer on the Gators. Though to be honest, I was also rooting for some Buckeye points, to help us get to the over. With the score at 34-14 at the half, Briggs and I were in pretty good moods, and by the end of the game, I could not have been happier about the Florida win. Cause let’s face it, 200 bucks is a lot of money.

So yeah, congratulations Gators.

[Side note: Does anyone else think that this whole 2-championships-in-one-year thing is pretty stupid? I mean, sure they're in the same calendar year, but let's not forget that we're talking about COLLEGE sports. As in, a year is usually defined as August-May. So really, your championships are in two different years. Win again in basketball and I'll give you some props, k?]

Glad to see you are enjoying the Gator Victory. But you still managed to hate on the Dual Titles. Yes it is a bit like the “Tiger Slam” than the “Grand Slam” but no matter how you define a year….we are the first school in history to simultaneously hold both titles…thats as of yesterday night and will last at least until April.

You know me - I gotta bring at least a little haterade.

But fair enough. You do hold ‘em both for the moment. Go ahead and gloat.
