Trees, Gators

January 8th, 2007 · 4 Comments

This weekend was great. After getting 2.5 hours of sleep on Thursday, and staying at the office late on Friday to finish up some things, I decided not to go out on Friday. Who knew that taking a night off could be so refreshing?! After a full 12 hours of sleep - during which I Nostradamus-ly dreamed about Jessica Alba playing football on the beach - I woke up to get brunch with some friends.

Saturday, was like most January Saturdays, except for that IT WAS NOT. With the temperature hovering in the 60s, it felt more like a Mid-October Saturday, so after brunch, we decided to take a brief trip to Central Park. Where the little kid in me went nuts.

“I wanna go stand up on the big rocks.”

So we went to the big rocks, where we could get a birds-eye view of the people milling around, playing in a new playground, enjoying the unusually warm weather.

“I wanna go climb that tree.”
“Amish, I don’t think you can do that.”
“Why? There’s no rules against it.”
“No I just don’t think you physically can do it. You’ll hurt yourself.”
“No I won’t.”
“Dude, you’re acting like a little kid.”
“But I can still climb it.”

And climb it I did. After analyzing the tree and figuring out my attack, [about of a quarter of the way] up I went.

Note the outfit - hat, blue sweatshirt, jeans, and….loafers? Just screams “whatever - this is easy” doesn’t it?

Also - don’t you love the fact that there are even pictures of this? As soon as I shimmied up, everyone whipped out their cell phones like it was some milestone in my childhood development. “Amish, smile at the camera! Wait, one more! Keep looking!”

Ah, its fun to act like a kid sometimes. Until you realize you are not a kid, are in fact a much heavier and less agile version of what you once were, and are now faced with the dilemma of climbing down from a tree. While wearing loafers.

Right before this picture was taken, someone said “Rishi, go catch him.” Notice how he is nowhere to be found.

Later, while leaving the park:

“Can I have some ice cream?”

I’ve made a decision of sorts. A month ago, I hated Urban Meyer, and hated anything that contributed to Florida even getting to tonight’s game. I was pretty damn ready to root for OSU for the title, a notion that contradicts everything it is to be a Michigan fan. But a week after Michigan’s embarrassing loss to USC in the Rose Bowl, I’m ready to be a rational thinker again, to swallow my pride, and go with a team that, though I don’t love, I haven’t been trained to hate.

I’ll be rooting for the Gators tonight. I use the term ‘rooting’ loosely.

I’m still upset about the BCS fiasco, and still don’t care much for Meyer. I’m upset that the Michigan loss means Florida fans will (continue to) misinterpret what the voters were really voting for a month ago. That they’ll think it was about Them, when it was really about Not Us. But whatever, nothing will change that.

But if not Michigan, I guess I’d prefer to see Florida take a stab at the title. I have close(r) ties to the school, plus I’d rather not give OSU more fodder to rub in our face for years to come.

So good luck tonight boys.

Go Gators!

Except as a child, there would have been no cell phone cameras to document this feat. That’s the real beauty of our age now–we can now obsessively photograph things as we did as children, but under the illusion that it’s not like we brought our actual cameras, or anything, but it would be really good for the blog.
