Now Let’s Make It An Amendment!

November 8th, 2006 · 3 Comments

With all the hoopla surrounding yesterday’s elections, it is important that we, as citizens of these great United States, reflect back on the actions taken by our legislative branch in the last few years.

Of course, there are the obvious topics to consider, such as the Patriot Act, gay rights, abortion, stem cells, the war on terror/Iraq/just about anything. These topics have been at the forefront of much national debate, and have rightly received considerable media attention.

But there are also lesser-known actions taken by our legislators, ones that may not have received much media fanfare, that we should reflect on. For example, you might not have known about House Resolution 460, proposed by Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-Ohio) on November 20, 2003 in the 1st Session of the 108th Congress. This proposed resolution received very little, if any, media attention (if it did, I don’t remember hearing about it), despite being the greatest fucking thing to have ever been done inside the House of Representatives.

An excerpt:

Whereas The Ohio State University and the University of Michigan began their football rivalry in 1897…

[laundry list of interesting UM-OSU trivia]

Whereas on November 22, 2003, the Ohio State Buckeyes will visit the Michigan Wolverines at Michigan Stadium in the 100th meeting between the two football teams: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives–

(1) congratulates The Ohio State University Buckeyes and the University of Michigan Wolverines on the 100th football game of their rivalry; and

(2) recognizes The Ohio State University Buckeyes and the University of Michigan Wolverines football game as the greatest sports rivalry in history.

I know, right? If the full text of this resolution wasn’t actually listed at the Library of Congress, I wouldn’t believe it either.

10 days and counting…

Our tax dollars at hard work…really there aren’t any more pressing issues that they could have addressed with that time??? Also, you left off the fact that they banned internet gambling which hurt everyone…except for organized crime…again Nice Work!!!

Oh yeah, and they voted to give themselves a raise while keeping minimum wage constant b/c a family can live off of $5.15 an hour but not $200K + for a partial year’s work
